Wink’em Blink’em

I learned this song as “Wink’em, Blink’em,” with the words shown below as the two verses.  I have since discovered that the song is (apparently) more commonly known as “Winkum Winkum,” and have found at least one moderate variation in the words to the first verse which I have shown below as the “alternate” words.  (In fact, when I search online for the “Wink’em Blink’em” title I haven’t found a single reference other than here.  On the other hand, there are numerous children’s song recordings that include the tune as “Winkum Winkum.”)

I don’t know whether the title and word differences are a regional thing, or if somewhere along the line we just learned it wrong, but here it is.

Wink’em, blink’em, shut your eye
While I sing a lullaby
For the night is almost here
Stars are flickering so near
And the moon is peeping over
Yonder hilltop, capped with clover

[Alternate words to verse #1]

Winkum, winkum, shut your eyes
Sweet, my baby’s lullaby
For the dew is falling soft
Lights are flick’ring up aloft
And the moonlight’s peeping over
Yonder hilltop, capped with clover

Chickens long have gone to rest
Birds lie snug within their nest
And my baby soon will be
Sleeping like a chickadee
For with only half a try
Wink’em, blink’em, shut your eye
