Texas, Our Texas

The Texas flag

This is the state song of Texas, and at one time was learned by all school children in the lone star state.

Texas, our Texas, all hail the mighty state!
Texas, our Texas, so wonderful, so great!
Boldest and grandest, withstanding every test
O empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest

[Chorus]

God bless you Texas
And keep you brave and strong
That you may grow in power and worth
Throughout the ages long

Texas, O Texas, your freeborn single star
Sends out its radiace to nations near and far
Emblem of freedom, it set our hearts aglow
With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo

Texas, dear Texas, from tyrant grip now free
Shines forth in splendor your star of destiny
Mother of heroes, we come your children true
Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you

Hi, My son needs to learn this song for school. I’m wondering if it’s available music and words online somewhere?? Thanks

Connie, you can find a MIDI version of the song (should play from your browser or through Windows Media Player) on this “Songs of Texas” site.

The MIDI version they have there is a bit hokey, recorded in almost a polka style, but using the words on my page and listening to the tune from that MIDI should be enough to figure out the tune pretty easily. I wasn’t able to find a good sung rendition in my web search — sorry!

Hope that helps. Good luck to your son!

No one seems to recall the wording change in this song. Our music teacher told us with tears in her eyes that we could no longer sing “Boldest and biggest” but we must sing “Boldest and grandest” since Alaska was added as a state and was bigger than us….

BTW — they still teach it to the little ones – it is Texas of course – -O empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest
And people wonder why Texans are so proud — we were taught that from the very beginning
