My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean
February 27, 2008
This traditional Scottish folk song has been around for at least a couple of centuries. Some say it is singing of Charles Edward Stuart, known in Scotland as “Bonnie Prince Charles” (or “Bonnie Prince Charlie”), who was supported by many mid-18th century Scots in his attempt to regain the English throne for the royal line of the Stuarts.
My Bonnie lies over the ocean,
My Bonnie lies over the sea;
My Bonnie lies over the ocean.
Oh, bring back my Bonnie to me.[Chorus]
Bring back, bring back;
Oh, bring back my Bonnie to me, to me.
Bring back, bring back;
Oh, bring back my Bonnie to me.Last night as I lay on my pillow,
Last night as I lay on my bed;
Last night as I lay on my pillow
I dreamed that my Bonnie was dead.Oh, blow ye the winds o’er the ocean,
And blow ye the winds o’er the sea;
Oh, blow ye the winds o’er the ocean,
And bring back my Bonnie to me.The winds have blown over the ocean,
The winds have blown over the sea;
The winds have blown over the ocean
And brought back my Bonnie to me.
