God Our Father

My kids taught me this simple musical prayer a few years back, and we’ve learned two slightly different sets of words.  Both versions are sung to the familiar tune of Are You Sleeping?

God our Father
God our Father
We thank You
We thank You
For our many blessings
For our many blessings
Amen
Amen

The second version goes like this:

God our Father
God our Father
Once again
Once again
Thank You for our blessings
Thank You for our blessings
Amen
Amen

The kids first learned this song at church, where their Bible classes used it as a blessing before snack time.  At home, we often sing it all together as we begin bedtime prayers; sort of a “call to prayer” to get everyone quiet and in the right frame of mind.

Thank you thank you. My 3 year old has been singing this song for the past couple of weeks. My husband and I couldn’t understand her and didn’t want to ask her “what are you saying”.
It’s nice to know the words to sing along with her.

My granddaughter sings this song like this:

    God our Father
    Once again
    Thank you for our blessings
    God, our man
    God, our man.

Almost like, “God, you da man!” We crack up every time she sings it. I think I’ll let it go for a while before we correct her.

We love this blessing, and we’ve recently adapted it to involve younger children and guests. We sing it as an ‘echo prayer’. One child leads the song, starting with the first phrase, “God our Father”. The rest of the table echoes. Then the leader leads the second phrase , “once again”, before waiting for the table to echo. And so forth, until the whole blessing is sung.
